Common questions

Does this remove all identifying information?

It clears the standard document properties. It does not remove content from the pages themselves, nor every trace in the file's internal structures. For genuinely sensitive material, treat this as a first step rather than the whole job.

Why does my PDF list an author I've never heard of?

Because the template or the software that first produced it filled that in. It propagates through copies until somebody clears it.

What's the difference between title and filename?

The filename lives on your disk. The title lives inside the file, and it's what many readers display in their window title and tab. They're often wildly out of sync.

Can I edit metadata on a protected file?

No. The file has to be decrypted before any tool can read its contents, and that has to happen in your PDF reader.

Will this change how the document looks?

No. Metadata is invisible on the page — nothing about the layout or content changes.
